What can I expect during a visit?
Before the initial visit, I will ask you to fill out an on-line nutritional assessment questionnaire, complete a 3 day food journal, and provide a brief health history. This should only take an hour or so of your time. Ideally, you will complete this information before the appointment and return it to me so that the initial visit can focus on your health concerns and assessment.
The initial visit/assessment can take between 2 to 3 hours and is often broken down into two appointments. You can expect the following during the initial visit:
The Interview: We will discuss your health concerns, look at your health history and gather relevant information.
Food Journal: We will look at your food journal and discuss your goals for your diet. Suggestions for modifications will be provided with detailed explanations about how your diet is impacting your overall health. Educational information and resources will be provided.
Nutrition Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ): We will discuss the results of the NAQ which are summarized in a graphic format suggesting where you are out of balance in relation to the five foundations (digestion, blood sugar regulation, essential fatty acids, minerals and hydration). The NAQ also provides information about potential nutrient imbalances and priority health areas to address.
Functional Evaluation: This is a hands on non-invasive evaluation to further identify areas of nutritional strength and weakness. Examples of some of the tests include a pulse test to determine overall allergic tension, a zinc taste test, oral ph to help assess mineral status, a postural hypertension test to determine adrenal status, and a tissue calcium test that looks at degree of muscle cramping at rest to determine tissue mineral status. The practitioner will also apply pressure to various points and reflexes on the body and ask for a tenderness rating to get a more complete picture of your priority health areas. This set of tests only requires that you relax on a massage table fully clothed while the practitioner applies pressure to these points for assessment purposes only.
Lingual Neural Testing: The second phase of the functional evaluation uses the above tests to determine which nutrients, foods or herbs will most quickly address the health imbalances. A tenderness rating is given for a particular point, and the client then puts a food or supplement in his/her mouth and the point is retested. The goal is to determine if the supplement or food helped, made things worse, or was neutral. This is a neurological feedback loop originally identified in medical school anatomy books that relies on the body’s innate intelligence to prioritize supplements and foods most appropriate to healing.
Personalized Nutrition Plan: After the assessment is complete, I will recommend a personalized nutrition program keeping in mind your preferences and health concerns. You will provide your input, and together we will agree on a personalized nutrition plan that works for you.
Education is vital to improving and understanding one’s health. I will make sure you receive the information that you need to feel empowered to take charge of your health. As your coach, guide and consultant, my goal is to see you gain knowledge and acquire the information that you need to achieve optimal health.
Follow up sessions: These sessions are vital to assess and monitor your progress while making adjustments as needed. Follow-up visits are thirty to sixty minutes in length. Once we determine that you are making substantial progress, I will provide you with a maintenance program and you will be back on the path to health.
Referral: If the client is not making improvements, we will discuss referral options. Guidance and support will be provided to determine appropriate next steps. However, the nutrition and lifestyle changes that you make will provide a foundation for the care you receive from another health care professional.
